Swine Flu Epidemic - What you need to know

The Swine Flu is becoming a cause for concern for canadians as more outbreaks are surfacing daily. Here are some basic Naturopathic precautions that you can take to keep and your family low risk!

1) Maintain a healthy diet full of vegetables, fruit and whole grains. Avoid processed foods and sugars as they depress the immune system.
2) Maintain a healthy lifestyle - exercise and stress management are key
3) Get adequate sleep - rest is vital for healthy immunity
4) Hand washing - this is basic hygiene as shoult be practised throughout the day.

In addition, your naturopath can discuss proper nutrients for a healthy immunity (vitamin C, vitamin D, beta carotene etc); botanical support to stimulate the immune system; and homeopathy.

The key is PREVENTION!! if you are feeling tired or run down, or suffer from frequent infections, please see your Naturopath for help immediately!

New Weight loss Program now Available!!

I'm very excited to be telling you about the new weightloss program now available at Vitality for Life. Actually, it's not just a weightloss program, it stimulates a healthy metabolism in ALL individuals, and takes care of many chronic conditions like thyroid disorders, blood sugar imbalances and many hormonal issues.
The program involves having a blood test done through Gamma Dynacare (40 lab values are checked), and then a specific nutritional plan is presribed based on your individual 'metabolically active' foods. During this 4-6 week intensive phase patients experience weight loss and improvement in all areas of health. During the maintenance phase more foods are added to the food list as the patient moves towards their goal weight.
This is a wonderful new program that is a positively driven nutritional plan and individualized to your specific body and blood type, which is really refreshing!
More information is available at the clinic, or you can email me your questions!

Quick Healthy Dinner

This weekend was a busy one for us, and after being out all afternoon i had to think of a quick and healthy dinner. I had some salmon steaks in the freezer, so I sauteed them in a little olive oil, garlic, ginger and soy sauce. I boiled a whole head of cauliflower with 2 cloves of garlic. Once tender, I drained the water out and pureed the cauliflower with a little salt - it looked like mashed potatoes, and tasted very similar. We always have carrots and brocolli in the fridge, and some peas in the freezer. I diced the carrots and cooked them for a few minutes, and then threw in the brocolli and peas for a few minutes. This entire dinner took about 20 minutes - it was healthy and delicious, and someting that we all enjoyed. You just need to get creative with what's in your fridge.
Oh, and as a treat for the kids, i make popsicles out of the 'Arthurs' fresh smoothies. They contain banana puree, which gives the popsicles a soft bite. The kids LOVE them, and they are a decent option for the occasional treat.
